Howdy my friends,
I’m writing to share some updates…
Many of you have heard about the floods in Minot (which occurred right after the Billings seminar) and may have wondered how the dragstrip is doing. Initially, it looked badly as the state predicted the racing surface would be under 10 feet of water, actually, it was around four feet. This makes a huge difference in the likelihood of the track’s survival as it reduces the hydrostatic pressure underground. Evidently, underground water pressure can get so high it can lift a road surface off the ground. You folks in Billings have seen this already as your 12,000-gallon septic tank at the track was pushed to the surface by this same force.
In any event, the potential problem was due to the fact that if the track “heaved,” then settled, it would have formed hundreds, if not thousands, of cracks, destroying the surface. On Saturday, I was able to get on the property and inspect the damage. While the tower was a mess (the electronics were upstairs and are safe), the racing surface was filthy, but otherwise in good shape, no new cracks have formed… we’re still in business. We still have to be careful and keep equipment off the surface. That side of town still has no electricity, so clean-up will be hampered slightly, but the point is, Magic City International Dragway will reopen. I don’t know how (I’ve never gone through this before), but we hope to produce our Motor Magic Race in early September. So in other words, the northern Prairie region has NOT lost a dragstrip.
Unfortunately, I went into the water to try and cross the evacuation zone and take photos of the track while the water was at its highest levels. Yep, the police caught me and wrote me a warning and yep, I got very sick (fever, body aches and diarrhea. I had open cuts and bug bites on my legs.)
Regarding the DVDs that some of you ordered, please be patient with me. My fever has been very hard and I have not been able to finish my sales effort to collect the 20 presales I need. I’m still three sales shy of being able to place an order.
I do have some exciting news. I have collaborated with Dick Alexander, the manager of the dragstrip in Douglas. We have a date for a seminar/workshop AND test session, all to be held over two days, August 20 and 21. The really cool thing is that the event will cost the same as a normal weekend. Dick is going to permit students who bring their cars to make single-car 60-foot passes after their work in the shop is done. The date is on my website and you can register there or call me at 567/242-9779. If you do bring your car, and register online, please leave a note in the memo section of the registration page notifying me that you are bringing your car. There is a 10-car limit so don’t wait long. I expect this will be a very popular learning experience.
I’d also like to ask for your help. I need to have the following announcement posted on as many local forums as possible so if you do participate in any forum boards, please copy and paste the following announcement.
I thank you and my family thanks you.
God bless you all…
Dave
